Another module of lectures - book club - at the Balkan Youth School was held on 9 July 2020 by Prof. Dr. Lejla Turcilo from the Faculty of Political Science, University of Sarajevo. Professor Turcilo, whose specialization and area of interest is in media theories, online communication, media literacy and media freedom, is also the Head of Department of Journalism at the University of Sarajevo. Professor Turcilo delivered a module titled "Politics, Media and Youth in the Western Balkans" based on her book "Zaradi pa vladaj: Politika-mediji-biznis u globalnom društvu i u Bosni i Hercegovini".
During the seminar participants had the opportunity to learn and discuss on some of the key components about media in the Western Balkans, level of media pressure in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, ethical principles of media, radicalization of youth through media, and media stance towards past events. Discussion during seminar also included points and questions like: What is the level of media freedom in Bosnia and regional countries? What are the statistics related to media freedom? How do young people use the media? How to develop media literacy? What are the system solutions for quality media?
The Balkan Youth School is an educational platform in the humanities, social and religious sciences. The study program is organized through modules, providing basic knowledge of history, human rights, international relations, political theories and issues, socio-political and religious issues, Ottoman history, arts and architecture, genocide studies, leadership and political thought.
The project is being implemented by the Balkan Studies Center of the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) and supported by The Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB).
