Workshop held - Practical Techniques and Skills for Academic Writing

On 24 April 2021, Assist. Prof. Dr. Ervin Kovačević, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FENS) of at the International University of Sarajevo, held a workshop “Practical Techniques and Skills for Academic Writing” as a part of the Balkan Youth School (BYS).

Writing is a precious skill. We utilize written materials for various goals, such as exchanging information, changing polices and laws, or sharing personal experiences. Our family members and teachers help us to acquire various subtleties of the writing process as we mature. At a very early age, as we struggle with differentiating all sorts of symbols, they match their instructional objectives with our abilities. As we make gradual progress, they rarely hurry us; they know how challenging the skill is. Hoping that we will start writing better than we do, they often wait for years. However, when we join our undergraduate programs, we are suddenly supposed to know how to produce good academic texts. It seems that our instructors somehow run out of compassion for our writing styles during freshman and sophomore semesters; our academic success starts to heavily depend on our abilities to produce the written text. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Although writing for academic purposes cannot be mastered in one workshop, its core elements can be partly unveiled. Professor Kovačević has offered a minor but important insight into the academic writing process. The skills of planning, drafting, paraphrasing, citing, and editing have been discussed and practiced. A few valuable tips have been highlighted.
